Recreation and Dehydration

Recreation and safety. Together? The fact is we should exercise responsibility at all times. What fun is it when something goes wrong? One avenue of safety is staying hydrated in warmer temperatures. Dehydration can set in easily, primarily due to exposure to sunlight and heat.

Water recreation can rob the body of hydration. Sunlight causes dehydration in two forms. First is the sun’s heat causing you to sweat. As the body attempts to cools itself by sweating, it can deplete hydration. Second, but not least, the sunlight reflects from the water’s surface making it more intense than on dry land.

The first sign which most people relate to dehydration is thirst. However, medical studies have proven that experiencing thirst is an ndication that you may already be dehydrated. It is the throats natural process to try to stay moist. Even if you quench thirst, it does not necessarily mean that you have replenished lost fluids.

Primary indications of dehydration include dry or sticky mouth, excessive sweating, lack of urine or dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, lethargy, and even irritability. If you experience these symptoms as a result of sunlight or heat, it is time to consume water and seek shade. Other helpful factors are to add a light shirt with sleeves and wear a wide brimmed hat. Remember, sweat of moderation cleanses our bodies of toxins but you should still hydrate to replenish lost fluids.

As a bonus, adequate water consumption gives you a healthy glow. Now that’s a positive reflection!
